Eco-friendly Renovations start at Sinethemba Boarding School
Johannesburg, July 6, 2010
The Themba Trust is pleased to announce that extensive renovations to the value of over one million Rand have started at the Sinethemba Boarding School complex. All renovations are done in an eco-sensitive manner, under the supervision of a specialist environmental company, OrganiCarbon, which has also assisted the Themba Trust in its design for the new planned private residential high school.
The focus of the renovations are on a complete electrical re-installation, based on environmentally sustainable practices, a specialist roof paint called Thermoshield, to cover the school roof, as well as the asbestos roofing of the kitchen and ablution blocks and the refurbishment of the dining hall, kitchen and laundry complex.
In addition, the Themba Trust is purchasing new mattresses, bedding, linen, crockery and cutlery for each student accommodated at the hostel. Parents of students that pay full hostel fees have contributed to this purchase at the beginning of this year. Scholarship learners will benefit from an investment made by the Themba Trust out of rental income for the school from the Department of Education.
Nico den Oudsten, resident architect and Acting CEO, is coordinating the renovations between the specialist team from Johannesburg and the local Themba building maintenance staff. Reinhild Niebuhr is sourcing the various bedding and kitchen items in Johannesburg, purchasing directly from factories, where possible, to achieve cost efficiencies. All suppliers to the Themba Trust will be approached by OrganiCarbon to take part in an environmental audit, with the aim to ultimately assist the Themba Trust in becoming a carbon credit accredited institution.
To keep track of the renovations over the next couple of months, you're welcome to connect to Reinhild Niebuhr via facebook, and request to be her friend.
